In a move aimed at improving waste management and protecting the environment, the Tiruchi City Corporation has initiated the setup of a poultry and seafood waste recycling unit at the Ariyamangalam dump yard.
Currently, Tiruchi generates around 30 to 40 tonnes of poultry, meat, and seafood waste daily — a figure that touches 50 tonnes on weekends. Until now, a Tirunelveli-based firm was handling waste collection and recycling, but recent controversies, including illegal medical waste dumping, have hampered its operations and led to delays in waste collection.
As a solution, the Corporation has permitted the agency to establish a dedicated recycling plant on reclaimed land at Ariyamangalam. A monthly rent of ₹56,000 will be charged, and the contract will be valid for three years. The unit is designed to process up to 50 tonnes of waste every day, ensuring that the city’s waste is managed efficiently.
According to officials, the recycling firm plans to relocate machinery within a week and has already requested electricity connections to speed up setup. Once operational, the collected waste from meat and poultry shops across the city will be processed into pellets, which will be repurposed as feed for fish farms — a sustainable approach that promotes circular economy principles.
This step is expected to dramatically reduce illegal dumping. Vendors have been notorious for discarding waste into local waterbodies like the Uyyakondan canal near Kasivilangi Market and Alwarthoppu, as well as dumping on vacant lands along Vayalur Road and in M.M. Nagar.
By ensuring organized waste collection and recycling, Tiruchi City Corporation hopes to protect local ecosystems and maintain cleaner urban spaces. Initiatives like these are vital for modern cities, especially in sectors like poultry and seafood, where waste management poses a major environmental challenge.
