In a significant appeal aimed at tackling environmental and sanitation concerns, the All Goa Poultry Shop Owners Association has urged the Goa government, along with Panchayats and Municipalities, to support the safe disposal of poultry waste across the state.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Association President C. Sequeira highlighted the alarming scale of the issue—an estimated 25 to 35 tonnes of chicken waste is generated daily across Goa. While the Association, which has a membership of around 330 poultry shop owners, has taken proactive steps to collect and transport waste to the Pissurlem waste treatment plant, Sequeira pointed out that this only covers a fraction of the total vendors.
“There are over 1,000 chicken vendors across Goa, but currently, only 330 of them—our members—are following a systematic waste disposal mechanism,” he said. “We need to bring all vendors under a streamlined system to prevent roadside dumping and ensure hygienic conditions.”
The Association emphasized the urgent need for collaboration between poultry businesses and local governing bodies to implement a statewide poultry waste management plan. Sequeira appealed to local Panchayats and Municipalities to assist in facilitating infrastructure, logistics, and policy support for a unified disposal process.
Improper disposal of poultry waste has become a recurring issue in Goa, with several complaints of unsanitary conditions near residential areas and roadsides. The Association believes that with official support, Goa can eliminate illegal dumping and shift entirely to safe, eco-friendly disposal systems.
