In a significant boost for Sri Lanka’s poultry industry, the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) hosted a high-level meeting with a delegation from the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) on August 1 to discuss export readiness and regulatory progress for Sri Lankan poultry products entering the Singapore market.
The meeting follows two important inspection missions by the SFA this year. The first mission, conducted in March 2024, assessed facilities at New Anthony’s Farm, NELNA Farm, and Ceylon Grain Elevators. A second visit, between July 28 and August 1, included audits of DAPH, Pussella Farm, Jaya Farm, and Bairaha Farms PLC.
Sri Lanka’s strength as a potential poultry exporter was highlighted through its disease-free status, strategic location, and competitive pricing. In 2024 alone, the country recorded $5.4 million in poultry exports—a 37% year-on-year growth—with products shipped to markets like the Maldives, Qatar, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and Japan. Work is also ongoing to tap into the Chinese market.
Several Sri Lankan poultry producers have already been shortlisted for potential export to Singapore, with formal applications submitted to the SFA. Discussions during the meeting focused on compliance with Singapore’s strict food safety protocols and regulatory benchmarks required for market approval.
The meeting was chaired by EDB Chairman and CEO Mangala Wijesinghe and attended by senior representatives from the Department of Animal Production and Health (DAPH) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation. The SFA team included senior officials from the Joint Operations Division and Regulatory Standards departments.
The discussions underscored the need for ongoing collaboration, with both the SFA and DAPH reaffirming their commitment to a streamlined export process. The SFA commended Sri Lanka’s proactive steps in ensuring high standards across the poultry sector.
There is growing optimism that Sri Lankan poultry products will soon be approved for export to Singapore, a move that would further strengthen bilateral trade and help diversify Sri Lanka’s agricultural exports.
