PUNE: In a landmark move that could transform the future of allied farming sectors, the Maharashtra government has granted “agriculture status” to poultry, dairy, animal husbandry, and fisheries. The decision, announced in July, places these sectors at par with traditional agriculture, making farmers eligible for all government schemes, subsidies, and loans.
Following the announcement, the Centre has sought detailed information from the Maharashtra government to evaluate the decision at the national level. Officials confirmed that the matter will be discussed in a minister-level meeting with all states.
N Ramaswamy, Secretary of the Animal Husbandry and Fishery Department, said,
“This is a very important decision which will have a huge impact on allied sectors. The central government immediately took notice and has asked for details to study it further.”
For years, farmers in poultry, dairy, and fisheries were excluded from agriculture-specific schemes despite their critical role in India’s food and nutrition security. An official from the animal husbandry department, speaking on condition of anonymity, added:
“These sectors are very much a part of agriculture, but policies have always favoured traditional farming. Now, poultry farmers will be able to avail low-interest loans, subsidies, and schemes previously out of reach.”
Why This Matters for Poultry Farmers
The move is expected to bring long-awaited relief to poultry farmers who face rising input costs and limited access to credit. By being recognized as part of agriculture, poultry farmers in Maharashtra can now benefit from:
- Subsidised credit facilities
- Crop insurance-style protections for livestock and poultry
- Eligibility for central and state agriculture schemes
- Stronger bargaining power in policy decisions
Experts believe this recognition could set a precedent for other states and potentially lead to a nationwide policy shift benefiting millions of farmers in allied sectors.
