Highway Closure Pushes Poultry & Essentials Prices Soaring in Kashmir

Srinagar, Sept 3: The week-long closure of the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway has disrupted supply chains across the Valley, leaving residents grappling with skyrocketing prices of essentials, particularly poultry and eggs.

Locals across Sopore, Baramulla, Bandipora, and Srinagar reported that both vegetables and poultry products are being sold at nearly double the usual rates. “Chicken that used to cost Rs 125 per kilogram is now being sold for Rs 190, and even then, the quality is not fresh. Eggs have also become much costlier,” said Aadil Firdous, a resident of Baramulla.

Vegetable prices have followed the same trend, with haakh (collard greens) rising from Rs 50 to Rs 80–90 per bundle, and tomatoes and beans nearly doubling. Vendors argue that the surge is due to shortages and delayed supplies. “Whatever little stock we get comes at higher costs. Selling at old rates is not possible,” explained a vegetable seller in Srinagar.

Authorities in Baramulla claim to be taking measures to prevent overcharging. “Market checking squads are active, and dealers have been warned. Anyone found violating pricing norms will face strict action,” an official said.

The poultry sector, in particular, has been severely hit. With restricted transport access, daily supply of broilers and layer eggs into the Valley has slowed, creating pressure on both availability and pricing. For thousands of families dependent on poultry for protein, the sudden rise is proving unaffordable.

Industry experts note that such disruptions highlight the urgent need for stronger cold-chain logistics and a localised supply ecosystem, so that poultry farmers and consumers are not left vulnerable whenever connectivity is blocked.
