Mandya, Karnataka — In a move to promote backyard poultry farming and empower rural women, K.R. Nandini, Chief Executive Officer of Mandya Zilla Panchayat, has called on self-help groups (SHGs) to submit proposals under the State Government’s Kukkuta Sanjeevini scheme.
During her recent visit to Tailur village in Maddur taluk, Ms. Nandini toured the native goat farm of local farmer Jagadeesh and lauded his success in animal husbandry. Impressed by the profitable farm operations, she directed officials to identify gram panchayat-level groups interested in taking up poultry farming and locate appropriate spaces for setting up backyard poultry units.
The Kukkuta Sanjeevini scheme, highlighted in Karnataka’s 2024–25 Gender Budget, provides six-week-old chicks free of cost to women SHG members, encouraging them to start small-scale poultry ventures. This initiative aims not only to boost rural livelihoods but also to increase the availability of eggs and meat locally.
Ms. Nandini emphasized that women-led SHGs can also benefit from government schemes supporting goat and sheep rearing, apart from poultry farming. These integrated livestock initiatives are designed to improve rural incomes and promote women’s entrepreneurship in agriculture and allied sectors.
In addition to her farm visit, the CEO also reviewed operations at the local veterinary hospital in Tailur. She inspected procedures such as artificial insemination for cattle and vaccination against foot and mouth disease, and examined outpatient records and treatment documentation.
This outreach reflects the Karnataka government’s increasing focus on strengthening grassroots animal husbandry practices and supporting women’s active involvement in rural economies.
