Thiruvananthapuram: The Local Self-Government Department (LSGD) of Kerala has issued a directive restricting the inter-district transport of poultry waste, in an effort to prevent illegal movement and dumping of waste across districts.
According to the latest order, the transport of poultry waste between districts will be permitted only under specific conditions approved by the State Pollution Control Board (PCB). The restriction aims to tighten monitoring and ensure proper disposal practices within the stateās poultry sector.
As per the PCBās standard operating procedure (SOP), inter-district transport will be allowed only in cases where a rendering plant in a neighbouring district is closer than those within the same district, or when local plants lack adequate processing capacity or are temporarily non-functional due to breakdowns or maintenance issues. Any other exception will require explicit approval from the District Level Facilitation and Monitoring Committee.
The LSGD has directed all sub-divisional magistrates, municipal and panchayat secretaries, and enforcement officers to take strict action against violators. Vehicles found transporting poultry waste in contravention of the new rules are to be seized, and authorities have been empowered to proceed with confiscation and auctioning after providing the vehicle owners an opportunity to be heard.
The new regulation is part of the stateās broader initiative to ensure scientific waste management and curb environmental hazards associated with the improper disposal of poultry waste.
