Thiruvananthapuram Rethinks Poultry Waste Management After Illegal Dumping Incident

In the wake of illegal dumping of poultry waste near Nedumangad, the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation is considering a major shift in its waste transportation strategy. The civic body is exploring the possibility of using its own freezer-equipped vehicles to transport poultry waste to rendering plants, a move aimed at curbing malpractice and ensuring environmental safety.

Currently, private contractors handle the transport of poultry waste to two rendering units in Ernakulam. However, recent events have cast a shadow over the effectiveness of this system. A shocking case of waste from city poultry shops being dumped in nearby panchayat areas not only triggered public outrage but also led to the arrest and termination of the driver involved.

“At a recent Corporation meeting, we discussed alternative systems to prevent such incidents. One proposal is to manage the waste collection and transportation process entirely in-house. Although this would increase operational costs, it would also give us greater control and accountability,” a Corporation official stated.

A critical issue exacerbating the crisis is the lack of functioning chicken waste rendering plants in or around Thiruvananthapuram. Two such facilities in the neighboring Kollam district are currently out of service—one shut down due to public protests and the other awaiting clearance from the Forest Department.

In addition to rethinking transportation logistics, the Corporation is also planning to introduce an online payment system for poultry shop owners. This aims to eliminate overcharging by contractors and improve transparency in waste collection charges.

As cities grow and consumption rises, effective poultry waste management is no longer optional—it’s essential. Thiruvananthapuram’s push toward a more accountable system could set a model for other municipalities across India grappling with similar challenges.
