Aththipudhur, Valliyoor: A group of residents from Aththipudhur near Kalanthapanai in Valliyoor submitted a petition at the weekly grievance redressal meeting held at the Collectorate on Monday, requesting immediate action against the insanitary conditions caused by nearby poultry farms.
In the petition, villagers highlighted that beedi rolling and farming are the primary sources of livelihood for around 60 families in the hamlet. However, the establishment of poultry farms near their village has led to severe health concerns, especially affecting senior citizens and children.
“Apart from the foul smell, houseflies from the poultry farms invade the houses and spoil the food. The situation becomes worse during rains, as the weather facilitates housefly breeding,” said R. Rajagopal, a petitioner.
The residents claim they have submitted multiple petitions to the village panchayat and the Valliyoor panchayat union over the past two years, but no action has been taken. The villagers are now urging the District Collector to visit their hamlet to witness their suffering firsthand and provide a permanent solution.
The petition brings to light the urgent need for proper waste management and sanitary measures in poultry farms to prevent health hazards and improve the living conditions of communities situated near poultry operations.
Understanding the Impact of Poultry Farms:
Poultry farms, if not managed with proper hygiene and waste disposal mechanisms, can contribute to foul odors, housefly infestation, and water contamination, which can severely impact local communities. Implementing biosecure waste management practices, regular sanitation, and proper disposal of poultry litter are essential to maintaining health standards and preventing environmental pollution.
At Eggora, we are committed to promoting sustainable and hygienic poultry farming practices. We encourage farmers to adopt modern waste management techniques and work closely with local administrations to ensure poultry farms do not negatively impact surrounding communities.
